چکیده

We analyze the problem of packing squares in an online fashion: Given a semi-infinite strip of width 1 and an unknown sequence of squares of side length in [0, 1] that arrive from above, one at a time. The objective is to pack these items as they arrive, minimizing the resulting height. Just like in the classical game of Tetris, each square must be moved along a collision-free path to its final destination. In addition, we account for gravity in both motion (squares must never move up) and position (any final destination must be supported from below). A similar problem has been considered before; the best previous result is by Azar and Epstein, who gave a 4competitive algorithm in a setting without gravity (i.e., with the possibility of letting squares “hang in the air”) based on ideas of shelf-packing: Squares are assigned to different horizontal levels, allowing an analysis that is reminiscent of some bin-packing arguments. We apply a geometric analysis to establish a competitive factor of 3.5 for the bottom-left heuristic and present a 34 13 ≈ 2.6154-competitive algorithm.

Improved Online Square-into-Square Packing

In this paper, we show an improved bound and new algorithm for the online square-into-square packing problem. This twodimensional packing problem involves packing an online sequence of squares into a unit square container without any two squares overlapping. The goal is to find the largest area α such that any set of squares with total area α can be packed. We show an algorithm that can pack an...

Online Algorithms for 1-Space Bounded 2-Dimensional Bin Packing and Square Packing

In this paper, we study 1-space bounded 2-dimensional bin packing and square packing. A sequence of rectangular items (square items) arrive one by one, each item must be packed into a square bin of unit size on its arrival without any information about future items. When packing items, 90◦-rotation is allowed. 1-space bounded means there is only one “active” bin. If the “active” bin cannot acco...

Improved Bound for Online Square-into-Square Packing

We show a new algorithm and improved bound for the online square-into-square packing problem using a hybrid shelf-packing approach. This 2-dimensional packing problem involves packing an online sequence of squares into a unit square container without any two squares overlapping. We seek the largest area α such that any set of squares with total area at most α can be packed. We show an algorithm...

Almost Online Square Packing

In the square packing problem, the goal is to pack squares of different sizes into the smallest number of bins (squares) of uniform size. We introduce an almostonline square packing algorithm which places squares in an online, sequential manner. In doing so, it receives advice of logarithmic size from an offline oracle which runs in linear time. Our algorithm achieve a competitive ratio of at m...

Improved Online Algorithms for 1-Space Bounded 2-Dimensional Bin Packing

In this paper, we study 1-space bounded 2-dimensional bin packing and square packing. A sequence of rectangular items (square items, respectively) arrive over time, which must be packed into square bins of size 1×1. 90-rotation of an item is allowed. When an item arrives, we must pack it into an active bin immediately without any knowledge of the future items. The objective is to minimize the t...
